Trpanj

Trpanj lies on the northern coast of Pelješac, facing Makarska and the Biokovo mountains. It has something no other place on the peninsula has: its own ferry link to the mainland.

The ferry, and why it matters

A ferry runs from Trpanj to Ploče, which shortens the arrival from the mainland and removes the need to drive the length of the peninsula. The timetable is thinner in winter than in summer, so check it before you build it into your daily life, but as an alternative to the road it exists all year.

For a buyer that means Trpanj is logistically closer to Split and the north than the map suggests, while being further from Dubrovnik than Ston is.

The village and the climate

It is sheltered from the south by the Pelješac ridge, so winter here is milder than on more exposed stretches of coast. The bay is sandy-shingle and shallow, which suits families. Trpanj also has a tradition of medicinal mud, historically used in a spa.

What comes up for sale here

The market is more modest and cheaper than the western end of the peninsula. There are older houses in the village, newer ones on the slopes above the bay, and some land. Top-end new build is rare, because foreign demand here has never been what it is in Orebić.

The season and winter

The season is shorter and quieter, mostly July and August. In winter the village runs at low tempo: a shop and a few places open, but no bustle.

What to watch for specifically here

• Check the current ferry timetable if you are counting on it out of season.
• On older houses, probate and co-ownership.
• Drainage and connections outside the village itself.

Getting here

There are two ways. By road from the Pelješac Bridge it is about an hour, through Ston and then along the northern side. By ferry from Ploče you cross directly, avoiding the drive down the peninsula.

That second option is why many people choose Trpanj: anyone coming from the north, from Split or beyond, arrives faster by ferry than by road. The timetable thins in winter, so check it before relying on it.

Who the village suits, and who it does not

Trpanj suits a buyer arriving from the north who values the ferry, and anyone after a calm, shallow bay and a milder winter. Prices here are lower than at the western end of the peninsula.

It does not suit someone after open sea and a sunset over the horizon, because Trpanj faces north. Nor someone counting on strong letting demand, which is weaker here than in Orebić or Viganj.
